Greener Wool Mergelland Aran is an aran weight yarn (needle size 4 to 5 mm) spun entirely from the wool of Mergelland sheep. The Mergelland sheep is an old and rare breed, tall and hornless. The fleece is composed of long, low-crimp fibres, which contribute to the yarn’s strength and durability. The breed originates from the Mergelland region, a hilly limestone landscape spanning parts of eastern Belgium, the south of the Netherlands, and western Germany. Today, it is considered critically rare and it is nearly extinct in Belgium.
Mergelland is a truly local yarn. We source the fleece in Belgium. While earlier editions of this yarn were spun in the United Kingdom, the current edition is made entirely in Belgium.
Mergelland is sturdy and durable, perfect for interior design and outerwear, and this aran version is particularly suited for warm cabled sweaters. It’s a worsted spun yarn, which means the fibres have been combed to align them in the same direction before spinning. That makes for a stronger and smoother yarn, because we think that if you put the effort into knitting a garment, it should last a long time.
We are currently expanding the range with new colour and fibre variations. Some of these are available as limited editions exclusively at Made In Wool, with more additions planned once the next batches return from the spinning mill. We’re focusing on the popular undyed colours first.
